UNDERSTANDING SCIENCE AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

COMPUTER SCIENCE AND COMPUTING/ENGINEERING 1. Computer science is a discipline that spans theory and practice. It requires thinking both in abstract terms and concrete terms. The practical side of computing can be seen everywhere. Nowadays, practically everyone is a computer user, and many people are even computer programmers. Getting computers to do what you want them to do requires intensive hands-on experience. But computer science can be seen on a higher level, as a science of problem solving. Computer scientists must be adept at modeling and analyzing problems. They must also be able to design solutions and verify that they are correct. Problem solving requires precision, creativity, and careful reasoning. 2. Computer science also has strong connections to other disciplines. Many problems in science, engineering, health care, business, and other areas can be solved effectively with computers, but finding a solution requires both computer science expertise and knowledge of the particular application domain. Thus, computer scientists often become proficient in other subjects. Finally, computer science has a wide range of specialties. These include computer architecture, software systems, graphics, artificial intelligence, computational science, and software engineering. Drawing from a common core of computer science knowledge, each specialty area focuses on particular challenges. 3. Computer Science is practiced by mathematicians, scientists and engineers. Mathematics, the origins of Computer Science, provides reason and logic. Science provides the methodology for learning and refinement. Engineering provides the techniques for building hardware and software. Finally, and most importantly, computer scientists are computer scientists because it is fun. (Not to mention lucrative career opportunities!) 4. Another definition from http://www.csab.org/comp_sci_profession.html Computer Science: The Profession Computer science is a discipline that involves the understanding and design of computers and computing processes. In its most general form it is concerned with the understanding of information transfer and transformation. Particular interests are placed on making processes efficient and endowing them with some form of intelligence. The discipline ranges from theoretical studies of algorithms to practical problems of implementation in terms of computational hardware and software. i. A central focus is on processes for handling and manipulating information. Thus, the discipline spans both advancing the fundamental understanding of algorithms and information processes in general as well as the practical design of efficient reliable software and hardware to meet given specifications. Computer science is a young discipline that is evolving rapidly from its beginnings in the 1940's. As such it includes theoretical studies, experimental methods, and engineering design all in one discipline. This differs radically from most physical sciences that separate the understanding and advancement of the science from the applications of the science in fields of engineering design and implementation. In computer science there is an inherent intermingling of the theoretical concepts of computability and algorithmic efficiency with the modern practical advancements in electronics that continue to stimulate advances in the discipline. It is this close interaction of the theoretical and design aspects of the field that binds them together into a single discipline. ii. Because of the rapid evolution it is difficult to provide a complete list of computer science areas. Yet it is clear that some of the crucial areas are theory, algorithms and data structures, programming methodology and languages, and computer elements and architecture. Other areas include software engineering, artificial intelligence, computer networking and communication, database systems, parallel computation, distributed computation, computer-human interaction, computer graphics, operating systems, and numerical and symbolic computation. iii. A professional computer scientist must have a firm foundation in the crucial areas of the field and will most likely have an in-depth knowledge in one or more of the other areas of the discipline, depending upon the person's particular area of practice. Thus, a well educated computer scientist should be able to apply the fundamental concepts and techniques of computation, algorithms, and computer design to a specific design problem. The work includes detailing of specifications, analysis of the problem, and provides a design that functions as desired, has satisfactory performance, is reliable and maintainable, and meets desired cost criteria. Clearly, the computer scientist must not only have sufficient training in the computer science areas to be able to accomplish such tasks, but must also have a firm understanding in areas of mathematics and science, as well as abroad education in liberal studies to provide a basis for understanding the societal implications of the work being performed. 5. from Mississippi State University Computer Science is the study of principles, applications, and technologies of computing and computers. It involves the study of data and data structures and the algorithms to process these structures; of principles of computer architecture-both hardware and software; of problem-solving and design methodologies; of computer-related topics such as numerical analysis, operations research, and artificial intelligence; and of language design, structure, and translation technique. Computer Science provides a foundation of knowledge for students with career objectives in a wide range of computing and computer-related professions. 6. From http://www2.cs.unb.ca/Problem solving. The study of efficient and effective software development techniques Teamwork and communication skill An interest in applying technology to solving problems in a wide variety of discipline 7. From the University of Missouri - Rolla http://www.cs.umr.edu/csdept/career/what_is_cs.html Computer Science is concerned with information in much the same sense that physics is concerned with energy; it is devoted to the representation, storage, manipulation and presentation of information. Computer Science is concerned with "the study of symbol-manipulating machines, with communication between man and machine and with the application of these machines". Major areas of Computer Science include: i. Operating Systems--concerned with the development and structure of complex programs which facilitate man-machine communications. ii. Computational Science--the analysis of numerical methods for solving mathematical problems with a computer. iii. Programming Languages--the study of the design and properties of languages by which humans communicate with computers. iv. Architecture--the study and use of mathematical logic to design electronic circuits. v. Intelligent Systems--concerned with means by which computers may perform tasks which might be characterized as "intelligent" if performed by humans. vi. Automate theory--an abstract study of computers and their capabilities. vii. Information Storage and Retrieval--the study of methods for storing a vast amount of data in a computer and methods for searching and retrieving this data. viii. Software Engineering--the study of tools and techniques for software design, development, testing and maintenance. 8. Another way to view any science is to look at the methods used within that science. In some sense these methods are similar in many (most?) sciences, but they can take on different characteristics in each discipline. Four important methods used in the study of computer science are: i. Invention --- formulation of new algorithmic and new architectural paradigms ii. Design --- software engineering uses design principles to build complex systems to solve computational problems iii. Analysis --- certainly a major focus within computer science is the analysis and evaluation of software, algorithms and architecture. iv. Experimenting --- use of experiments to reveal computing principles is an important method of scientific investigation within computer science.

Evolution and wildlife Galapagos

It is not difficult to see or discover an unknown animal. Spend a day in the tropical forest of South America, turning over logs, looking beneath barks, sifting through the moist litter of leaves, followed by an evening shining a mercury light on a white screen, and one way and another you will collect hundreds of different kinds of small creatures. Moths, caterpillars, spiders, long-nosed bugs, harmless butterflies disguised as wasps, wasps shaped like ants, stick that walk, leaves that opens wings and fly. The varieties are so many and one of these creatures is or will almost certainly be un-described by science. The difficulty will be to find a specialist who knows enough about the groups concerned to be able to single out new ones. No one can say just how many species of animals there are in these greenhouse-humid dimly lit jungles. They contain the richest and the most varied assemblage of animal and plant life to be found anywhere on the earth. Not only are there many major categories of creatures------monkeys, spiders, rodents, apes, birds, cats, hummingbirds, butterflies-but most of these types exists in many different forms. Accordingly there are well over forty different types or species of parrot, over seventy different types of monkeys, three hundred Hummingbirds and tens of thousands of butterflies. If you are not careful, you can be bitten by a hundred kinds of mosquito. The theory of evolution. The concept of it In 1832 a young Englishman, Charles Darwin, twenty-four years old and a naturalist on HMS Beagle, a brig sent by the Admiralty in London on a surveying voyage round the world, came to such a place, a forest outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. In one day, in one small area, he collected sixty-four different species of small beetle. That there should be such a variety of species of one kind astounded him. He had not been specially searching for them, as he wrote in his journal.’ Despite taken a degree in divinity in Cambridge—he was deeply perplexed and puzzled by the enormous multiplicity of life forms.’

Discovery on OMOTOLA EKEHINDE JALADE

These times are the days when anything is possible Nollywood Omotola Husband’s Scrap Plane Causes Panic In Lagos. A scrap plane formerly owned by the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries, Ajah, Lagos, caused panic in the city on Thursday as rumour spread that another aircraft had crashed in Lagos. It was learnt that the plane, which wasrecently released to Capt Matthew Ekeinde, husband of Nollywood star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde,was being dragged to Badagry area of the state before its tyre burst. The incident forced the new owner to dump the plane in a nearby filling station. Hundreds of residents trooped out withtheir smart phones and camera, and queued behind the gate of Dapsey Oil filling station at Igando where the planewas parked. A senior employee of the filling station said the plane, with registration numberN972TF, was being towed from Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja to Badagry when one of the tyres burst. He said, “The plane was brought here around 2am after one of its tyres burst. It was being towed by a red vehicle, but after it got to Igando, they discovered it would be difficult to get itto its destination with burst tyre, whichwas why they brought it here.” The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the police provided escort for the plane. He said, “About 12.45am, the command got a directive to escort the jet from MMIA Ikeja to Badagry by road. “The operation was led by one Capt. Matthew Ekeinde, but in the process ofthe journey, one of the jet’s tyres burst at College Bus Stop and the jet could not move. “It was parked at Dapsey Filling Station along Igando for repairs. We have provided security for the plane until it ismoved to Badagry.” PUNCH Metro observed that men of The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were on the ground to “ensure the safety of people” living in the area. The Igando Divisional Police Officer, Adeoye Olugbemiga, came with his team around 12pm to control on-lookers. In a short time, some of the residents turned the scene into an amusement park and began to pose and take shotsnear the plane. One of our correspondents observed that the plane’s two wings had been chopped off and the cockpit was stuffed with nylons. The Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nnamdi Udoh, in a statement, said the aircraft had long been within the agency’s facility till Wednesday night when it wasremoved. Udoh said, “The aircraft that was sighted by the residents was actually a junk one belonging to the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries. “The aircraft was actually released to Capt Ekeinde who will be using it for educational purposes in Badagry, Lagos.” Ekeinde confirmed on the telephone that the scrap plane belonged to him. He said, “The aircraft will be situated in a multi purpose and entertainment centre which will be open very soon. “When opened, the centre will be the first of its kind in West Africa.”

Discovery/cancer in children

Do children also have cancer? It is always an emotional moment to announce to concerned parents that their child is suffering from cancer. To get o the understanding of the concept that cancer as an infection has no age limit and answer the question above, do children have cancer also? We have to really know a little fact about the way our maker made these innocent children to resist some external attack on their immune system. Children are unique and most of the cancers they suffer are relatively and imminently curable as with many other medical conditions. However, late presentation is often a challenge because these children are brought to the hospital when all hope is nearly lost. These parents should have started out earlier by visiting a nursing home or some chemist/pharmacist close to their home before finally visiting the hospital. Sadly it is when they arrive at the hospital is the time they became impatient not wanting to carry out all the investigations requested and even worse, wanting something done immediately to remove the disease. These cancers have to be confirmed in many ways; X-rays, scans, blood test, urine tests and biopsies before a treatment plan is formulated for that individual. In reality, cancer is not a disease where one diagnosis fits every patient. The common cancers seen in children are usually involved or related to the kidney, liver, urinary bladder, muscles, the supra-renal gland which is a small organ that sits on top of the kidneys and very rarely, along the bones. Other cancers seen in children involve the white blood cell component of the blood and the lymphoid organs of the lymph nodes, Spleen and liver. it is important to stress here that parents need to be more observant of their children as they grow up. There ought to be no room where parents are busy chasing their careers to the detriment of their children’s health status. These are diseases do not simply arrive from not where, but often takes several months to develop. Basically a child with cancer will become less and less active. He will less energetic too. He will show certain swellings involving the affected part or at least, pointing to the affected part and there may be associated pain with attendant loss of appetite and excessive sleeping. Certain cancers which involve the intra-abdominal region will present with swelling. This is also the case with those involving the lymphoid organs. Children who suddenly develop swellings in the groin, arm-pit and neck at about the same time (swellings which feels like seed) should see a doctor without delay as with those who bleed from the gum or develop swellings in the joints or small boils resembling acne around their head and neck region. This piece is not intended to make the reader attempt to diagnose these problems but to know by merely taking a glance that certain growth which shouldn’t be where they are, are seen as potentially dangerous and should as such be brought to the doctor’s attention the minimum delay. Nothing could be further from e reality that the consequences of delaying treatment are disastrous.

UK AND THE SYRIAN REBELS

Britain said on Sunday that it and other countries were reluctant to arm rebels in Syria, even it warns that success in the battlefield by forces loyal to President Bashir Al-Assad was undermining chances of a Geneva peace conference. Britain and France worked together to lift the a European Union embago on arms shipment to Syrian rebels, giving them the flexibily to send weapons to forces who complained that they are dramatilly outgunned. Foreign secretary William Hague said on Sunday that no such decision had yet been taken and promises for the first time to give lawmakers a vote in paliament if and when it happens.

Their study centre in Ikorodu Lagos Nigeria. 20 TOP WEBSITE MISTAKES SMALL BUSINESS MAKES I’ve prepared this list, ‘The Top 20 Mistakes That small Business Make; form my own experiences in making my websites, as well as from my observations while learning and studying for my certifications. By no means complete these 20 Mistakes relate mostly to websites by small business (less than 50 employees) because they are typically organizations that outsource their web services. The list is further separated into “Design Mistake” being the mistakes that are made in the design of the site itself, and “Purchasing Mistake s” being the mistakes business make as customers of web design companies. First, we need to get on with it by covering the first mistake: 1. DESIGNING/ ALLOWING THE SITE TO BE DESIHNED BY A PRSON WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING- I’ve writing and rewritten this paragraph a dozen time so that it doesn’t sound offensive to anyone but the message is still the same………..join me for more update

Role of social media in marketing

Check this out! This is the popular Eyita-Ojokoro Road, Ikorodu Lagos ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN MARKETING A lot of people want to know what exactly social media is. What’s with being social media savvy? I am never tried of giving out (when necessary) the meaning of social media. If it’s possible, I would start off each write up with its definition. This is because there is always someone reading about it for the fist time. Social media signifies below-the line elements that are used to syndicate technology and social interface by using words. These elements are usually internet or mobile centered. Some of the elements we are very likely familiar with include but not limited to Twitter, Face book, MySpace and YouTube. What is the connection between social media and marketing? I have lost count of the number of emails I get with these questions? One thing is sure: when people start asking questions, it means they are willing to know, understand and then appreciate an idea, information or consider a new trend. One good added value of social media is that it gives marketers a voice and a way to connect with peers, customers and prospective consumers. It not only gives a voice, it also personalizes the “brand” and helps you to spread your message in a comfortable and chatty way. The only challenge of this new media is that it must be a part of your everyday life in order to keep the motion and devotion it to be effective. Let me state emphatically here that social media is not just for small business owners that are trying out an experiment. That said, understood and accepted; let’s now look at what role social media should play in your marketing? Marketing is a tool we use to inform consumers about our products, who we are and what we offer. Social media helps us have peer encounters. We can use social media to associate ourselves with our peers, which may be serving the same target markets. Social media can be used to stamp an identity, which are products and the services we offer. If we intent to be real with our customers both potential and loyal, Social media makes it possible. Sharing your personality makes people follow you presence to just discussing latest product news etc. Social media helps us create relationships with people who not be aware of our products or service or what our companies symbolize. Social media also helps with customer relation. It’s easier to interact with them on what they are looking for or expect from a product or service and how we can improve it to their satisfaction. Obviously and undoubtedly, you can agree no less with me that really social media carry a lot of added values. But how do you do it right? Social media should not stand alone in your entire marketing strategy; it must be integrated with other vehicles of marketing. As social media create all the sales you required at inception or start-up. I am not desired ROI with social media but it most probably won’t be at the instant. You always must be yourself and reflect a character. There are no laid down rules when it comes to social media, only your style, approach and strategy so much that it works well for you. Be consistent, if you do not plan on being consistent don’t do it at all -it’s a waste of everyone’s precious time. Why start when you won’t end well? With social media, if it must be dine at all, it must be done well. Wondering how effective social media has been? Success stories are abundant when it comes to using social media ranging from headhunters that find job applicants to new enterprises that want to announce a new product as well as existing and well established multinational companies that want to strengthen their brand or improve their services. The role of social media in your marketing is for it to serve as a communication gizmo that makes you accessible to those interested in your product and makes you visible to those that don’t know your product. Fact is social media is so generalized that it can be used in whatever way best suit the interest and the requirements of your business. Explore the use of social media as a tool to create a personality behind your brand or services and establish relationships that you otherwise may never gain. The result of a well utilized social media as an element for gaining repeat-buyers, but also securing customer loyalty.

Life in Nigeria and selfish leaders

A nation whose leaders are babes can never progress. Nigeria is ruled by illiterates whose lives are tied to corruption. Hope For Nigeria **JUST IN** Okonjo-Iweala Blasts Governors For Depleting Nigeria's Huge Savings. **Federal Govt was compelled to share$16.4billion accumulated in the excess crude account prior to the global economic depression, because they believed it was unconstitutional and illegal to save. **excess crude revenue account from $20billion in 2003 to about $3.6billion today was shared by state governors. The Minister for Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says Nigerians should hold the governors of the 36 states of the federation responsible for depleting theexcess crude revenue account from $20billion in 2003 to about $3.6billion today. The minister said Nigeria was able to survive the negative impact of the global economic crisis because it was able to augment its budget deficit and continue with most of its development programmes with revenues from a healthy Excess Crude Revenue Account. But, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, who is also the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, told a meeting of civil societyorganisations on Thursday in Abuja thatthe country might not survive another global economic downturn, with a depleted Excess Crude Revenue Account. The Minister said the 36 state governors should be held responsible for the massive draw down on the account, as the Federal Government was compelled to share over $16.4billion revenue accumulated in the excess crude account prior to the global economic depression, because they believed it was unconstitutional and illegal. “The Excess Crude Revenue Account was developed at the time we had some semblance of fiscal balance in our economy between 2003 and 2007,” the minister said. “That was when we started saving up to about $20billion. When the crash came in 2008, oil prices fell from about $147 per barrel toabout $38 overnight. We were able to go to that pool to smoothen our expenditures. “We were able to pay salaries and continue to pay for our capital investments in those two or three difficult years (2008 to 2009). That is why the Excess Crude Account, which has metamorphosed into the SovereignWealth Fund (SWF), is very important. “But, we have the governors saying no,it is illegal. In fact, it was a fight to even get $1billion paid into the SWF. We managed to save $20billion the lasttime, but now the governors are sayingit is illegal. So, the country is not able to save, andwhat is left in the Excess Crude Revenue Account today is only about $3.6billion. “Every month, we have been dipping hands and sharing it, instead of moving that money into the Sovereign Wealth Account, because the governors say it is illegal. We have shared until it is at the rock bottom. Should the oil price crash today, what it means is that we have no cushion, because $3.6 billion for this economy is nothing that can take us for any length of time.” The Minister, who spoke on the variouscomponents of the government’s current reform agenda, stressed the need for the country to continue to create safety nets in the form of savings in order to cushion any potential negative effects of the volatility in the international oil market on the domestic economy should therebe any further depression in the global economy. In view of recent developments in developed economies such as the United States and Europe, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, said the country was facing increasing challenge controlling its expenditure and maintaining fiscal discipline to allow for sufficient money to be left for the development of critical infrastructure that would help position the economy on sustainable path of inclusive growth in the years ahead. Describing the Federal Government efforts to diversify the country’s economy as the only viable option opento pursue in the face of dwindling revenues from crude oil exports as well as increasing volatility in the global oil market, the minister said ongoing transformation programmes in the agricultural and entertainment industries hold the key to Nigeria’s economic development and competitivenessin the rapidly changing global market
